Much is unknown about the coronavirus currently sweeping the globe. We know that it is deadly and highly contagious, but we don’t know why some people infected with the virus show terrible symptoms while others show none at all, or why children have a better time recovering. Researchers also know that the virus originated in China, but they have many questions about how it emerged. Sensational reports this week have given a boost to the idea that the virus might have accidentally escaped from a lab due to lax safety and security measures ― an idea that is reportedly being investigated by the US intelligence community. But that theory is just a theory. Scientists may not fully understand the nature of the global outbreak of Covid-19, the illness caused by the virus, but there are plenty of reasons to believe it did not stem from a lab accident or some kind of clandestine government cover-up.
